I've been reading a lot about this lately, and there are some guides on how to be a good/responsible fiscal sponsor as well as what is possible for organizations looking for sponsorship. It does mean someone has to do significant extra work. I've been wondering whether this is something the Bay Area Consortium of Hackerspaces might consider taking on. ie, they could incorporate in order to become a local incubator/fiscal sponsor for other hackerspaces.
hi danny!

TBH i don't really believe too much in 501c3 or kickstarter but this group is doing both. i keep doubting on everything but they keep bulling forward, building connections in the neighborhood and working to raise the money to buy a media editing station. I think that for them, the association with noisebridge and the positioning as a nonprofit endeavor are part of the broader campaign for hearts and minds, more than being specifically about tax deductions.

we've explored schoolfactory as an option (and honestly i kinda advocated for it since they have a better infrastructure for this) but the feeling of the project leaders was that it would be cool to keep the money in the community, and strengthen existing community ties. I'd be interested in hearing about other good options if they exist.

I'd love to meet up!
how about tuesday?
Okay!

Sudo Room is also interested in this. My feeling so far is that it
doesn't really give that much advantage to hackery-spaces, and you
might as well just go for incorporation on your own (the
tax-deductible donation thing doesn't seem to be something that many
people actually benefit from), BUT would love to go through it in a
bit more detail. Also I think there are a couple of other
umbrella-type organizations that I know about that might be worth
considering also, each with their pros and cons.

Let me know when you're around and we can talk about it!
Hi friends,

Some artists i know here in West Oakland have a space they are starting to
use for outreach, meetings, and classes in film/media and art-making, and
are looking for a fiscal sponsor. I am hoping to facilitate that process,
with Noisebridge as the sponsor!

My plan:

-polling for input& objections online& at meeting

-copy n paste noisetor wiki page to a new page, with info on OakTown Hall
project
-work with treasurer as necessary - iirc the donations go to NB, and NB then
cuts OTH a check for 95%? I forget how donation tracking is done for
noisetor; we are open to discussion in finding ways to do this that don't
add more work for the treasurer.

Let me know what you think!
