I managed to corner Chris, their lead tech dev at digifest yesterday
for about 10 minutes of questions, and I pressed him on exactly
this: what's the difference between this and neurosky?

He claimed that noise would be slightly reduced, but also said that
he doesn't think there will be substantial improvement in signal
because of electronics. The main difference that we talked about
for quite a bit was comfort and conformity. We both had the same
experience with the neurosky, which is that after about 10 minutes,
it starts to hurt to keep wearing it.

The Interaxon one has been designed to be a lot more comfortable.
The electrodes are actually conductive rubber, and the entire thing
is kind of rubbery, so it has a lot of flexibility to conform easily
to the size/shape of your head. He claims that with the better
contact between your skin and the device, signal is improved as
well.

In my opinion the increased comfort and better looks will make a big
difference in terms of my ability to actually wear the thing for
long periods of time, and that in turn opens up a lot more
applications. If it's as comfortable as he claims, I can even see
using it for Quantified Self type things, where you just want to
passively collect data about your mental state for hours on end
while you work(/procastinate). I imagine combining it with
something like RescueTime would be super interesting!

I only got to see/handle a non-functional mockup though, so it's
hard to know how much hype he was selling me. It can hardly be
worse than the neurosky though, comfort wise. Anyway, after
sleeping on, I sprung for the Earliest Bird today :-).
merely looks? Or is there something more to the story that I am
missing? Note that all I want to do is (essentially) turn an LED
on or off based on an attentive vs. meditative state.

I’m part of this cool project for which
a crowdfunding campaign
launched a few minutes ago:
. Thanks to Brad Templeton for
having unwittingly introduced me to
Interaxon’s CEO Ariel Garten (I
was already a fan of Interaxon’s but had
not met anyone there).

If you want one, by pledging quickly you
can get the best price (I
just did for myself).

Feel free to pass this on to anyone else
who might be interested.
