the only thing i would add is that the reason arc welders use a full face shield (and in the instructables link, as elsewhere, full skin coverage) is because it emits harmful UV light.

so stay covered. it's not just your eyes that need protection (oxy/acetylene is a different beast)
Also,
is this appropriate for the space (or shall I do it at home)?
Welding produces bad smelling things, sparks and light that's bad for your eyes. Welding done within a commercial building can only be done (legally) if the building is up to code for such things (thick firewalls, proper electrical drops, fire sprinkler system, etc). Also landlords normally require you to hold special insurance coverage (the sort of thing an auto body shop would have).

Anyway, past all that shit. If you get proper ventilation going (hard part), and have good welding gear handy and eye protection for you and those around in the space (easy part), I don't think safely welding things within the shop really would be an issue (thinking about space, etc).

Just having doors and windows open within 83c, I don't think will be enough, especially if other people are working in the building at the same time. I would recommend setting up some sort of good/fast fan to push air out of the shop and out of the building. Some videos on this site should be kind of informative on stuff one needs to keep in mind when dealing with welding within a space.
