Michael, since the list is cc'd, if you "reply all", everyone can get your replies. If people reply all to the list, they should get the same.

As a personal area of specialization, I'm interested in burn treatment, but that's not specific to Noisebridge.
They are also free to come, to a class, check it out and leave any time they choose, with no hard feelings and not certification. Thank you for remding people to take care of their needs, like sustenance, before the class, it can be disruptive if a lot of folks come and go during the lecture part of the classes.

Also, to clarify, being certifired has nothing to do with legal protection. The good samaritan laws protect us whether we have current certification, expired certification or no certification. Certification is not a licence, it is proof that you went through a fairly standardized
training. I go over this in a lot more detail in the CPR class.

The main reasons I give for taking each class are:
CPR:
Someone goes unconscious, You can call 911, and they'll show up in 5-10 minutes (on a good night) but if that person's breathing had stopped they'd be brain dead by the time the paramedics walk in the door. CPR can keep the person's brain alive, buying them time. CPR can be effective any time a person's breathing has stopped whether from toxic inhalation, a blow to the head, electocution or more commonly heart attack (which, as the leading cause of death, kills over half a million people a year in the US or >1/minute).

First Aid:
My class goes beyond issues like how to treat a burn or a cut. More importantly is knowing whether an accident or medical emergency is serious enough to call 911, or to drive them to the hospital, or to just treat and forget. Whether it's someone who fell and banged their
head, is suddenly short of breath, spills hot liquid on themselves, punctures themselves with a tool, gets something in their eye, or anything else.
I also go over what to do in the first critical minutes after a major emergency, to keep the situation from getting worse, while 911 is on the way.

Please forward any of this to anyone who might be interested.
-ml

--- On Thu, 4/2/09, Christie Dudley <longobord@gmail.com> wrote:
Since the EEG folks will be wrapping up at 5, 6:00 PM seems the best time to reschedule the First Aid + CPR class. From what I'm hearing Sunday night is the most convenient for everyone.

To be clear, this will be 4 hours of instruction in one evening: 2 for first aid and 2 for CPR. Come prepared. Get food before you arrive, and please, PLEASE try to get there about 15 minutes early so he can get everyone's names for their certifications. If you're late, you might not be able to get certified.

One of the reasons people who aren't required for their job to get certified is that if they help someone and wind up injuring them (say, breaking the sternum while performing CPR) the certification protects you under good Samaritan laws.
