i listed the problems and solutions on the thread i linked earlier. irc is too conversational for detailed, archived, discussions (unless you wanna sift through a chatlog and /try/ to figure out who was responding to who.). the mailing list is too convoluted and can get annoying to those who only wish to follow a few topics within a mailing list and are instead bombarded with topics they're not interested in. yes the lists have archives but their a pain to follow and find relevant information quickly as there's no real search function unless you download a whole months worth of threads IF the info is even in that month. i've had friends wonder if noisebridge had a forum and when i explained the mailing list to them they found it to be far less user friendly than a regular forum. the wiki, though good for storing information and project summaries, is not meant for discussions. wiki's are only ever good for encyclopedia building on specific topics, not collaborative discussions.

again. i don't know how to run a forum. even if i did, and even though there'd be free hardware to host it on and software to run on that hardware, it's no where near as secure as on such a large site as the ning. you'd need a significant botnet to bring down the entire site for only one network within it. plus, if the tools for building a forum are all out there and easy to put together why has no one done it? i'm actually taking the initiative and presenting a fully made forum to be used now and i'm even willing to allow the BoD know who i am and give them admin control so they can manage the platform.
All these other issues aside, I'm not seeing a very good argument for using this. It sounds like a solution in need of a problem to me. I am not seeing any functionality in that site that might need that we don't already have.

We can host whatever we want as we've had a lot of stuff donated, so choose carefully, based on need, exactly which non-controlled-by-noisebridge services we use. Each has a very specific use case driven by a real need. I'm just not seeing any need that we have to use ning.

I'm sure it's a very nice service. I fail to see what it will buy us, though, except one more thing for members to have to keep up on to know what's going on.

Christie
_______
Getting to the bottom of the hill is convenient. to the concerns about my trustworthiness would it be acceptable to give full admin rights to the BoD's? the full admin abilities mirror the creators abilities in all but three respects: the ability to have the final say on removing and altering powers of any admin rank created, the ability to purchase premium services (like getting rid of the ads or adding special featrues), and the 'delete network' button. I'm also willing to divulge my identity solely to the BoD's on the condition they don't repeat it if this helps the community feel that the site is more trustworthy to use.
