These are really important points Lief raised. I think my worst nightmare would be to see Noisebridge offering expensive and empty Wave-like classes. Then again, I think pretty much all of us agree on that one. The question is how close are we willing to get to it.

Yes, kickstarter is neat, but they take a cut. I think Noisebridge could do something along those lines, but *gasp* less formal and still make it work, though. Pledge pages on the wiki have worked well in the past.

Another side-concern off of that would be if some students pay and some students don't, will instructors be teaching to the paying students? That would be a shame, and I'd hope none of the instructors who teach at Noisebridge would do such a thing, but I've noticed such discrimination when I've been in a "can't afford it" situation.

Is there a better way to establish formal classes with serious students than to charge money? When I was talking to Slim about his experience teaching classes at Noisebridge vs. teaching classes at Academy of Art (correct me if I've got the wrong school here), he was explaining to me how much more serious the Noisebridge students were than the (paying) art school students. He had a huge following for the entire time he ran the class.

Thanks again for the great comments. I read all with interest.
Observations:

(1) There are aspects of excellence in both paid and un-paid classes.
(2) Money might go all to teacher, all to NB, or shared. There are
aspects of excellence at all ratios.
(3) Casual students and informal classes are excellent. So are serious
students and formal classes.

I think I'll do a class again this coming Thursday. I think I'll put a
donation jar somewhere. Any money found in it will go half to me and
half to Noisebridge. This does not represent any agreement or
disagreement with any of the points raised, but rather a reality if my
needs.
