As a new visitor myself, it feels like there's a growing rift
between
new visitors versus long-time visitors. I respect that the
long-time
visitors helped bring this space together, know more about the
vision of
the space, and make a conscious effort to keep noisebridge
alive.
That said, most of the long-time visitors don't actually show
up that
often. And when they do, the vibe I personally get is one of
entitlement as if to say "i own this and you're just a guest".
Cool. How do you define long timer? I've been going to NB for
about 6-7 months now, helped out with some darkroom stuff,
raised some cash, and don't show up that often. Which category
do I fall into? Oh yeah...its too hard to define. So really
there isn't a rift between newbs and old timers, there is just
a bunch of people who may have differing opinions.

As has been brought up a million times, there isn't a vision
of the space. No one owns anything either - its an anarchy
(ok, almost: "be excellent to each other"). The space is an
enabler. If you have a vision, use the space to act it out.

"I own this and you're just a guest"? Really? Think about
this. When you first tried to learn how to solder, you
probably tried a bunch of stuff, some people gave you some
suggestions, you assimilated those suggestions, and got really
good at soldering eventually. What would you have done if
someone more experienced ripped the iron out of your hand and
did the work for you on your first soldering joint? You would
have probably yelled at them at told them "I own this, and
you're just an observer". Now, look at a lot of the e-mails
you've been sending. Does it sound like you are trying to
supply constructive criticism/suggestions, or are you trying
to rip a soldering iron out of a person's hand? Given your
overall tone, is it surprising that you're getting a "I own
this, and you're a guest vibe"? No. I get that this may not be
your intention, but this is how several of your e-mails are
being interpreted (at least by me).
On the other hand, some of us, like me, use this space as our
personal
office. This is normal for some other hackerspaces, like
Hacker Dojo.
Basically, people work long hours at the space, take
legitimate naps
there, do some collaborating, and get a lot done.
Cool. I would call that a co-working space. Noisebridge is a
"hackerspace"...and an anarchist one at that. It says so on
the website. Therefore, expect shit to happen like sleeping on
couches, weird accounting practices, and laser eyed sharks
attacking cigarette machine robots. If you can get a lot done
in that environment and use it as your 9-5 office, have at it.
If you can't...well...don't use an anarchist hackerspace like
its a co-working space!
Whew. Time for a bourbon refill and a return to packing.
