Hey!

I'm kind of in for trying to get a laser cutter for Noisebridge. I think it depends a lot on the price of these dillios. If its $15k or something, is it really practical to get one? Would we just be better off sending out laser cutter stuff / using techshop?
Lets meet. I can meet this Tuesday, or any Thursday, and I can meet any other time with notice.

I know there is a "noisebridge needs a laser engraver" list that I may or may not be on (I suspect not) so we should invite them as well because I am sure they have invested brain power in to these problems already.

I know some of the arguments, but if there is a big enough community and enough support, I am sure these problems will go away.

I want to say that, while Techshop is awesome, the laser engraver is the most used tool there. I invite people to consider the savings they may have if they invest in a laser engraver for noisebridge instead of getting a membership to Techshop.

As far as burning the place down, it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY. These things are as enclosed as a microwave. They aren't as easy to use, and they are compatible with a limited number of materials, but people would have to REALLY FUCK UP to burn the place down with a laser engraver...like engraving gasoline soaked balsa.

Just say'n. Frick'n lasers.

On Sun, Jan 9, 2011 at 10:28 AM, Josh Myer <josh@joshisanerd.com> wrote:
Lets have a meeting on this. I have some insight from working at techshop on this, namely what kinds of terms we can have with vendors and why its important.

I'd be interested to hear what you've learned; my experience working with the local Epilog vendor were very positive, but it seemed like they weren't going to go out of their way for a smaller client.

We don't really have the resources to do much more than the bare minimum here, which is still enough to do interesting things (up to and including burning down Noisebridge).

I'm down for $100, if only to make people stop talking about how NB Needs A Laser Cutter ZOMG.

--
Josh Myer 415.230.9791 <-- NOTE: New number!
josh@joshisanerd.com
