There are drywall sanders in the drywall tool bin, last seen by me over by the kitchen near the mushroom logs

Use blue drywall sanders with handles for speed and accuracy. Regular grit sandpaper is not recommended for this job

as to painting, i'm guessing the 5 gallons of primer
we now have is PVA white.
if we're gong to put a top coat over it, i recommend
white-white, which has the greatest index of reflectivity
(about 95%; the lightest off-white has 90%, and most very
light colors reflect less than 90% of the light, some
light and all medium saturated colors are in the 70s or
less).
Not only do we get much more efficient use of lighting
with white-white, but we have much better control of color
in the space. note that a commitment to some hue (e.g. blue)
limits the possibilities of any decorations or alternate
colors in the space. white-white lets us put up the greatest
variety of posters and other colored objects without clumsy
color rhythms.
