Mostly lurking on this list (just moved to town), and some of this is a tangent, but I think there are a few good discussions here. What happened to Ilya was a great shame and loss, but clearly he affected a lot of people, and Diaspora is a truly tremendous project.<div>
<br></div><div>I spend quite a bit of time wondering about what ubiquitous social media 'means' - I use it plenty, and work in the industry that promotes it - and I also tend to worry about centralized control (of anything, in general, but moreso here).</div>
<div><br></div><div>I think it's ironic that Facebook's last developer conference was named 'F8' - and the way that they've been pushing frictionless sharing and user timelines seems to indicate that they'd prefer that every little thing that people do is recorded/published and made into -- effectively -- a huge library of self-delivered autobiographies in their datacentres. That worries me! But clearly it makes sense for their business.</div>
<div><br></div><div>Equally though I'm worried about not being able to record and share the things that people really enjoy in life and can share with others. So.. I don't know. Diaspora would maybe help there, and restore self-control. But I think part of the problem is that many people like to / start to enjoy attention seeking via these services, and that pushes the real 'network effect' they get, which smaller projects find hard. Anyone else? I'm rambling, it's Friday.</div>
