I feel your pain. I'm not an expert on this, but here are some
possible options:

-You can purchase your own domain (eg algoldor.com), and email
hosting service (eg Frantisek@algoldor.com). This would involve some
configuration. This will cost you about $10/year for the domain, and
under $5/month for email service. You can use your own preferred
email client (outlook, sylpheed, thunderbird, etc).

Some services:

--1and1: 5 mail accounts, 2 Gigs, automatically backed up,
$1.50/month http://www.1and1.com/mail?__lf=Static&linkOrigin=&linkId=ct.nav.mailoffice.instantmail
--namecheap: 3 gigs, 1st year free, free backups on request,
$3/year after that https://www.namecheap.com/email/email-hosting.aspx

lots other services out there, read the fine print, beware of prices
that get jacked up after your first year, ask if they do backups,
read reviews.

-Get an account on Noisebridge's pony server, buy a domain from any
domain-seller, and then install an email server on your pony
account. Then, no 3rd party (except Noisebridge) will have your
data. You'll need to get approval from the pony admins. Might not be
the most reliable option.

-Buy a domain from any domain-seller, set up a server-computer at
your home (with always-on connection), and then install an email
server on that computer. Let me know if you'd like help.

-Switch to gmail-- free, 15+ gigs, no config effort, great spam
filters. I've used both G and Y, and imo Yahoo sucks and gmail has
the best features of any free email. But, you might not like gmail
for your own ethical reasons.

-JustHost likely has backups, most hosts do. Did you ask them for a
backup?

Best,
