<p style="margin-bottom:0in">To Romy,</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0in">Happy Feminist Night is a fantastic
idea. Please go ahead and create it at Noisebridge! I'll help if
I can.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0in">Remember that Noisebridge is a
do-ocracy, so you can just do it, or get friends to help you do
it.
You don't need anyone's permission. Of course, you might check
the
main page (<a href="http://noisebridge.net" target="_blank">noisebridge.net</a>) and look at the weekly class/event
offerings there. You could use it to choose the best time and NB
place for it. I'd go for sure!</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0in">"Alien" is scarier than it is
feminist, and might not bring a pro-feminist audience. Lots of
Sci-Fi
people, though.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0in">A lot of very important feminist
writers say men can be feminists, including bell hooks. The best
definition I saw in the thread, said "feminism is about women's
liberation." The key word here is "liberation," which
all of us can aspire to.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0in"><span style="font-style:normal">Patriarchy
injures
everybody, including men. It brutalizes us and coerces us
into machista roles that severely limit our choices. Men, of
course,
do receive </span><i>some</i><span style="font-style:normal"> benefits
from
patriarchy - but working men, men of color, and gay men are
constantly victimized by it in ways most of them can't even
see. </span>
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0in"><span style="font-style:normal">A
socio-economic analysis reveals that most men are oppressed
under
capitalism. Patriarchy, racism, police brutality all
contribute to
that oppression, and none of them exclude men from the damage
done by
these phenomena. Women are indeed the special victims of
patriarchy,
but they are not the only ones.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0in"><span style="font-style:normal">This
is
not to give more weight to mens' victimization than to that of
women. It is merely to state that which is: both men and women
are
oppressed. If men are willing and able to contribute to the
feminist
project of liberation than they should be free to do so.</span></p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0in">I know several men who identify as
feminists. I don't wish to contradict them or argue with their
beliefs. Granted, they might identify as other things, too, like
gender-questioning. But men have a stake in liberation as surely
as
women do. So for those men among us who choose to contribute to
the
feminist project, and who call ourselves feminists, let us
remember
that we are doing much more than merely “affirming patriarchy,”
when we strive to break the chains. We are actually helping
everyone to
advance to freedom.</p>
