How about just turning the troublesome 2x4s into firewood? New 2x4x10'
are about $2.50 each piece or less.

I don't mean to be wasteful but it seems to me that this could easily
reach a point of diminishing returns.

Otherwise, the best tool that I've used by far for pulling stubborn
nails is the FatMax from Stanley.
