   from my view, the benefit is easy clean up in the 
future (a long, long time, with many spills and 
sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming in the picture). 
   all that's needed is to fill holes and cracks and 
put a tough, flexible top coat. 
   the purpose of sanding is to remove the top 1/32 
inch of wood that's grimy and groady so's to ensure 
that the filler and top coat will stick.
