     sanding drywall "mud" is terrible :
* it takes significant time to sand, and sanding
* creates the worst kind of dust--teeny, talcum
    powder-sized granules that get into everything
    and are tough to remove.

     you can minimize sanding by
* using the drywall knives to ensure there are no
    raised parts--depressions can be filled much
    more easily.
* using wet rags to wipe the edges of the newly
    applied mud (also works after the mud has dried).
