[Build] lasersaur?

i just gave nortd labs $32 for access to their knowledgebase and community.
 for like 8k worth of parts we could build our own large bed laser cutter.
i feel like this idea may have been floated in the past, and obviously
we're not gonna be doing this like next week, but as a longish term plan
(maybe get at least the parts ordered by new years?) i think it would be
great thing to have.  we have enough Adults With Real Jobs around here
where it's fundable, and maybe run a kickstarter/donation round to cover
costs (fund our laser, get lasercut prizes!)?

sidenote: as a Concerned Citizen of the People's Republic of Nosebridge,
i'd prefer if the laser built as a result of this effort wasn't
automatically a public use item, i.e. if one wants to use the laser they
need to take a short class to get laser-certified like at techshop or
something.
