Cool -- thanks. €4,800 is about $6,300. I look forward to hearing more details.

One more datapoint.

tog.ie is currently in the process of building their own lasersaur. I asked a friend of mine there what the approximate cost was for all their parts and he estimated about €4800. I’d wager that shipping costs to Ireland wouldn’t have been trivial so it could be cheaper again for us to source the parts.

I’ll try to catch up with someone there and see how they’re getting along with it / source more details.

We can also make the Lasersaur with a higher power laser than the one we have (so we can cut things heavier than 1/8" plywood).

Raising $8k within the community is certainly do-able. Let's get a team together of people interested in doing the work to make the Lasersaur, then we can start fund-raising. I'm way happy to help, but I'm out of town most of the time from 31-Oct through 21-Jan.

I'm not up on the status of our laser cutter.

yay to getting the lasercutter back! that laser is a 9x13 inch bed, though, and i would really like to have a large bed (like 36x48 inch) cutter in the space as well, and the lasersaur project seems like the cheapest way to get one of that size.

the total materials cost from the BoM is around $8k if you purchase from that list.

the last i heard, the current laser cutter needed a replacement part, can someone confirm/deny?

Our later cutter is indeed w/ Shannon. The plan is to hopefully have it back in the space within a ~week.

+1 to having some sort of proficiency requirement. Would love to take a class on using laser cutters myself :)

I think our laser cutter is with Shannon Lee.

I think it would be great to have a nice Lasersaur in addition to the small one (which can cut 1/8" plywood) we already have.

I also agree that to keep the laser cutters usable, we should require proficiency -- abs taking a class is a great way to do that! We should have classes, anyhow, to encourage the use of our laser cutters.

How much do we need to raise to get the Lasersaur parts?

Looks neat. I'd love to have laser cutter in the space.

Doesn't noisebridge have a laser cutter already in some state of disrepair? Will read through mailing list archives but I was under the impression we had one in storage which is due to be returned sometime post-reboot.

i just gave nortd labs $32 for access to their knowledgebase and community. for like 8k worth of parts we could build our own large bed laser cutter. i feel like this idea may have been floated in the past, and obviously we're not gonna be doing this like next week, but as a longish term plan (maybe get at least the parts ordered by new years?) i think it would be great thing to have. we have enough Adults With Real Jobs around here where it's fundable, and maybe run a kickstarter/donation round to cover costs (fund our laser, get lasercut prizes!)?

sidenote: as a Concerned Citizen of the People's Republic of Nosebridge, i'd prefer if the laser built as a result of this effort wasn't automatically a public use item, i.e. if one wants to use the laser they need to take a short class to get laser-certified like at techshop or something.
