Short version: 21-year-old Malawian grade-school dropout experiments
with his Panasonic radio, figures out how to broadcast with it, starts
community radio station for his small mountain village. Three years
later, national radio licensing board gets pissed off and prosecutes;
he's convicted and ordered to pay a 50,000 kwacha (~$350) fine or spend
10 months in jail. Villagers raise money to keep kid out of jail, news
media covers story, radio licensing board gets embarrassed and not only
gives him a free community license, they also agree to fund up to 10
million kwacha (~$70,000) worth of equipment.

Oh, and a private secondary school has offered him a full scholarship.
