You might also consider some HTs that take alkaline-sized batteries as well.
Wall cubes aren't much good when there's no electrical power.

A fun hacker-friendly radio is the Elecraft K2. It's a kit for a
modern HF transceiver. I've built it, and it's a lot of work, but a
lot of fun.
