[Cyborg] Cyborg Digest, Vol 15, Issue 6

Eric,

I'd suspect that the govt safety standards use 5mw as a rough guide but that repeated hits of a 5mw laser aren't a great idea for your long term eye health. You won't feel the immediate damage - the pinholes that lasers put in your corneas automatically get filled in by your brain's vision processing system, making them invisible to you. You need detailed vision tests to become aware of the pinholes.

Perhaps you can make these diodes non-coherent (perhaps with something as simple as some saran wrap - not sure?) but coherent enough to still be directional. I have a 5mw ruby and FIR laser used for rapid healing of injuries; you can look at it because the laser is not coherent, but the light is still is very "laserish" looking.

Now I want a suit with a dozen of these 5mw lasers, tied to a CCD sensor and an aiming device, so that when I walk past a camera (or drive past a traffic camera), my laser outfit will overload the ccd sensor, making me invisible (or at least blurry). :)

Thanks for this awesome list!

If you determine that the lasers work with application of power (vs needing a more complex circuit to drive them), I'm up for $50 worth.

-Dave

I find this pretty incredible.

http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2010/06/the_sound_of_one_hand_programming.html

http://www.half-qwerty.com/

For one-handed touch typing. They map the other half of the keyboard via mirror on the half you have a hand for. You can access the second half by holding down the space bar while you type (or hack your own button as the Make guy did). Apparently your brain figures it out really quickly because you already know how to touch type... awesome.

If it's not too late (wow, this all happened so fast!), please put me down for about $50 worth.

Not too late yet. I'm planning to order very late today - in time to get shipped before the weekend from China. I'm hoping we can have these suckers before the end of next week!

With Sean's extra 10 units and your $50, we need at least 12 dozen now, which is awesome, I've always wanted a gross of lasers. I wonder what the flock term for lasers is, perhaps a "blind of lasers"?!? :-)

OK, I've placed the order. We got 15 dozen, placing us in the highest discount category offered, go group orders!

I don't know how long DHL will take to get it here, but most likely we'll have them by the end of next week, certainly by the end of the week after that. When we get them I'll send a message to this list (and
noisebridge-discuss) about pickup. I'm at noisebridge on a fairly regular basis, of course, but how does the cyborg meetup time (Sunday
afternoons) sound to everyone for a group geekout and delivery time?

Also, buyers owe me money. I'll take cash or paypal on delivery of the lasers.

Details from the order on the wiki:

So, we're probably going to need fog machines of some sort in order to make the beams from the laser properly visible.

There are basically three types of fog generators:

1) Chemical, using heat to vaporize "fog juice". This is what clubs use.
They typically require a ~kW of power for the heater, and 5 minutes to warm up. Obviously that'll never be wearable. But, maybe some small wearable version could be built somehow? I'm thinking of some kind of tiny heater, and a way to "drip" the fog juice. Not sure how much fog you could get that way though, even if you pulled it off. Almost certainly not the solution we need. Interestingly, you can get these fog machines surprisingly cheap, I found several at the $50 price point.
Fog juice is about $20/gallon. Does noisebridge need a fog machine?!?

2) Ultrasonic. Basically, mechanically force vapor out of water. Makes a heavy (sinking) fog. Still has fairly large power requirements, typically 24V @>1 amp, i.e. 25W or more - possible for batteries, it'd be heavy, but doable. This usually only yields a small amount of fog, suitable for e.g. a small fountain. Maybe that's sufficient. Can't be used with fog juice, it gums up the ultrasonic emitter (darn!). Overall I don't think it could be made to work.

3) The winner: dry ice. Simply add water to dry ice and presto, fog.
Primary concern is safety, dry ice is dangerous. Still, I think this is the clear choice. You could have a little hand-pump to meter out the water into a chamber in e.g. a backpack, and tubes to guide the fog where you want it. Bonus points if you can engineer the dry-ice chamber into your laser costume somehow :-). Anyone know where I could buy some dry ice in the Mission?

One final thing: you could just actually use smoke, i.e. burn something.
It might be harder to control that though. Perhaps the use of something like Smoke Candles?
