I also just finished reading Life At The Speed of Light (J. Craig 
Venter's new book), it seems like after decades of hype, we might 
finally be entering the era of designer genes and lifeforms?    It would 
surprise me if there isn't something more than laboratory 
proof-of-principles out before the end of this decade...
