Very cool video of a paraplegic using a device to stimulate his leg 
muscles in order to drive a recumbent bike.  The article is fun too:

"Triolo has pioneered the use of electrode “cuffs” that are surgically 
implanted and wrap around the nerves themselves.  Each tiny cuff of 
silicone rubber has four embedded platinum contacts that touch different 
spots on the surface of a nerve bundle, allowing stimulation of specific 
nerve fibers in intricate patterns."
