[ml] anything going on tonight?

Just to brief anyone new to the ML stuff - we have meetups every
week, 7:30pm in the Church classroom. Every few weeks we have
a presentation/workshop on an ML topic. Although we haven't been
keeping track lately, we've had meetups about the following topics:

Generalized Linear Models
Neural Networks
Independent Components Analysis
Semi-supervised Classification
Agent-based Learning
Random Forests
Self Organized Maps
Random Walks and the Page Rank Algorithm
k-Means Clustering/Expectation Maximization for Mixture Models
Hidden Markov Models/Speech Recognition
Bias/Variance Tradeoff
Information Retrieval (search)
Inverse Problems/Meta-heuristics

The group is stochastic and has a somewhat seasonal component,
things seem to be slower in the summertime. Later this summer I'm
going to try and get all the slides made public for these talks and list
them on the wiki. Don't be afraid to repeat any of the already-mentioned
topics, the stochasticity of the group implies that you'll always have
interested people!

We've also worked on a few different data mining competitions, including:

Last year's KDD cup challenge for educational data
Kaggle's HIV Genomics Competition
Kaggle's Social Network Competition

My personal opinion is to move the group in a direction that balances
workshops for teaching and projects. Anybody who has a personal project
they want people to work on is encouraged to share with the group and
present it, and feel free to use ML meetup time to do so.

Have fun! Hopefully see you all next week,

  mike
