  *New Competition: Mapping Dark Matter*

The universe isn't behaving. Or at least, that's the view of many of the
world's leading scientists: it behaves as if there is far more matter than
we can observe. And that's important, because it means either that vital
scientific theories are wrong or that there are whole new types of stuff
that we haven't yet discovered. These new types of stuff are called "dark
matter".

A consortium of the very best (from NASA, the European Space Agency and the
Royal Astronomical Society) have come together to call for your

The
competition requires participants to measure the elipticity of galaxies in
astronomical images. This measurement is used to determine whether or not a
galaxy has been gravitationally lensed and therefore helps determine how
much dark matter exists between the observer and the galaxy. The winner
receives the ultimate prize: an invitation to NASA, to work with a team of
invited experts who will help turn your ideas into reality. This competition
could help in answering one of the biggest questions science has ever
tackled.

*Don’t Overfit Competition Stage one*

The first stage of Phil Brierley’s Don’t Overfit competition has come to an
end. The competition attracted 265 teams. The stage one winner was
Ecuadorian computer scientist Jose Solorzano. Jose has achieved several top
ten finishes, so it’s nice to see him win one! In second place was Tim
Salisman, another strong performance after his victory in the Deloitte/FIDE
chess competition.
