[Noisebridge-announce] Feminist Book Club For Men: tomorrow 7pm
me at tomlowenthal.com
Wed Jan 8 03:19:33 UTC 2014
The first meeting of our feminist book club for men is in less than 24
hours. I'm excited!
We'll meet tomorrow, Wednesday 2014-01-08 at 7pm in the Noisebridge
library area to discuss *Feminism is for Everybody* by bell hooks.
There are copies at plenty of SFPL branches, and there's even one in
the Noisebridge library. It's in the smaller bookcase, next to the
shop, by the Cory Doctorow and Neal Stephenson novels.
I'm going to try and operate a facilitated discussion. If there are
points or questions which you think are important, please let me know!
Otherwise, we can just try to meander through understanding together.
If you can't make tomorrow's meeting, don't sweat it. We plan to meet
once per month on the second Wednesday, so our next meeting will be on
2014-02-12. I'd like to pick next month's book at tomorrow's meeting.
If there's something you really want to read, but can't make it, do
get in touch, or edit the [wiki page]. In the absence of strong
preferences otherwise, I'd like to pick something from Shanley's
[feminism reading list] or some of the further readings from Julie
Pagano's [101 off-limits list].

[The rest of this message is some of the explanation from the original
announcement. Nothing new to see here.]
Some folks may be wondering why there's any need for a feminist book
club, much less one for men. Has a woman ever told you that something
you said or did isn't okay, but then not spent an hour of her time
teaching you why? Here's an opportunity to understand and learn one
way to be a better person, in a safe environment where you're free to
be wrong the first two times.
Why have a feminist bookclub *for men*? Women shouldn't have to spend
all their time teaching men about feminism, or how not to be jerks.
There's plenty to read on this topic, and men should be responsible
for teaching themselves. Women are of course welcome, but shouldn't
feel obliged to come: there are lots of more interesting things to do
than teach men how to be decent human beings.
See you tomorrow!
