501(c)(3) status doesn't really take all that long to get. I have an 
acquaintance down in Orange County who's done the paperwork for a 
501(c)(3) educational nonprofit before; I've emailed him to ask for a 
copy of the paperwork he filed, in case we wanted to use it as a template.
