As a point of ignorance of mine: Could the external access have gone 
down because of a power outage?  If so, why would power cycling it have 
fixed it?  I didn't think to look at the LEDs before cycling it so I 
don't know what it thought its state was then.

UPS sounds like a fine idea though.
