Here's another idea for separating kitchen and chem lab (I don't like
the idea of moving kitcheny stuff upstairs b/c of floor space and rug). 
I don't know if it would provide enough distance, though.

We could easily move the stove to the other end of the counter, next to
the fridge, where it would stick out only 20".  We know we need another
vent, we'd just run the new one to that end leaving the existing one for
the chem lab.  We could then put in some kind of thin partial wall
either at the end of the counter or, with a bit more difficulty, across
the counter, depending on how much space each area is assigned.  Chem
lab would get its own dedicated hot plate.  This would give a very
distinct separation of areas: kitchen to the left, chem lab to the
right.

It would look pretty odd but I doubt anyone will care much about that.
