If it is running OSX, you can boot with the cmd-s for single user mode  
and see where it's failing to boot. Also, sometimes you need to "reset  
the pram" which likely still exists on the 3-4 year old machine.

Also, you might be able to share an osx hard drive on a laptop over  
firewire and boot off off it, then have the tools necessary to test  
the Imac's hardware.

Just some thoughts....
