[Noisebridge-discuss] [RUG] Data integrity, SMART and SSD's

Hi John and NB,
I've seen solid state drives (specifically ones less than a year old)
become unusable from SMART failures. And I am not trying to start a
flamewar, but that white paper only samples 2000 drives. I see more
failed drives than that in a year. And I check SMART on every one that
mounts. SMART is a wonderful way to confirm your gut hunch when things
start to hit the fan, but is not so great at flagging failures before
they happen. Oh and in case you happen to own any device with a 1.8"
HDD, expect SMART-related failures to be the reason you need to
replace the drive at some point.

I agree with Jason that multiple backups and some type of data
integrity (zfs, hash, or parity that flags inconsistencies) is your
only viable road to long term reliability and vitality of your data.

Good luck.
