Actually hardware geeks are more in demand for individual art projects
if you want to get involved.  For example, folks working on the
Flaming Lotus Girls' project SOMA are doing a soldering build day on
Saturday and could certainly use some help, although the design work
is already done, etc.  It's too late to be starting to talk about
hardware at this point.
