This Friday, 5pm(ish) is another installment of Mandarin corner.
Last week we talked about adopting the wikibooks Mandarin book as our
child. I think this is a good idea. We can work through the book, and
actively improve it:

We will start with LESSON ONE. So, if you are a Mandarin noob and have
been scared to show up, this is your great chance!
>From now on I will be administering "tingxie", meaning that I will say
words and you have to write the characters from memory. My teachers in
China always did this and I found it extremely helpful. Noobs, don't
be shy; we'll teach how how to write and how to learn the characters
first. We will do tingxie weekly starting with vocabulary from the
wikibook lessons. To help prepare for this, we shall start making
flashcard files that can be used in spaced-repetition flashcard
programs like Mnemosyne. Tomorrow let's settle on a format for these
flashcards and get this ball rolling.
