It might help to add the Allegro A3977 to the parts database.

Seems that the part is available from digikey:

Looks like the fab at home contraption

uses it. It's real easy to use on the off the shelf xylotex boards,

but with an electronics CAD system, it might be cheaper (and way more
fun!) to design a drive board (or decentralized boards attached to the
motors) from scratch. 

Unless, of course, you end up deciding to use servo motors instead.
