Hello All,

For those who haven't heard, DerEngel, author of /Hacking The Cable
Modem/, was arrested a couple of days ago. The FBI was involved and,
according to what I'm reading, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a
$250,000 fine. You can read the story here: http://snipurl.com/t1s1z
[www_computerworld_com]

I edited DerEngel's book and he always made it quite clear throughout
the process (and subsequently) that he was not advocating theft of
service. His book is really about low-level firmware hacking, for the
most part. I don't pretend to know the full back story though; all of
the information that I have is information that I've gleaned online.

This is a chilling event for many hardware hackers but it just makes me
want to publish more books about hardware hacking and reverse
engineering. And we will, as I find them.

I'm trying to contact DerEngel via email but I've had no luck so far.
I'd be happy to pass along comments to him if I'm able to reach him.

Presumably, he's already been in touch with the EFF.

Bill
