IANAL & IANYL, but:

TTBOMK as someone who's read this stuff, the main thing this impacts
is how the IRS classifies NB in determining whether it is a
non-profit. There are two different tests - IIRC, 'public support' vs
... something else, I forget what. This came up once before on NB and
I gave all the details and links; search the mailing list for me and
IRS and you'll find it.

However, there's an exception for unusual one-time donations (which
this clearly is). That exception might have limits, though; I don't
remember what they are if any.

I'd suggest it's worth asking the NB tax lawyer just in case.
