After nearly 3 months of coming to Noisebridge every week, I'm finally
emerging from lurkerdom - hello, everyone! : )

I think that an intro to programming class or two would be a great idea.
I've been going to Python/Ruby whenever I can (kind of tough since I work
down in Menlo Park). The classes have been really helpful, but I'm lacking a
sense of the Big Picture. A couple additional things that could be
interesting in a general Intro to Programming Class:
-Functional vs. object-oriented vs. declarative, interpreted vs. compiled,
static vs. dynamic programming languages (+ examples of these languages,
their purpose & types of users)
-How different programming languages interface with hardware/access memory

I also have some thoughts/suggestions about classes at Noisebridge in
general, as follows:
- Scheduling: Why not break out evenings into two or three chunks (i.e. 6:30
- 8, 8:30 - 10) and only schedule classes within those certain time slots?
That might help to solve the problem of overlapping classes.
- Team teaching: Co-teaching or having substitutes lined up when necessary
would lessen the teaching burden and ensure that there aren't any gaps
between classes (which sometimes leads to the class losing steam).

After teaching a few programming classes at Noisebridge, I've
realized there's a need for an "intro to programming course".
 My loose ideas are here:

http://github.com/jsnx/learn2program/blob/8d85856379077f01e107c7063b1c3be688ae6d91/README

The course introduces a few basic tools -- the shell, the
editor and version control -- and then touches on console
programming. We allow the student to develop their first
 interactive program quickly.

The interactive program extends into a simple algebraic
 expression evaluator, for expressions like:

   21 + 3

We go on to extend this language with variable bindings. The
students learn to program by building out a simple programming
 language.

What do folks think about a class like that? When I've talked
 to people in person, the response has been entirely positive;
I'd like to get other listmembers' views.

Finally, we have dates for the Noisebridge China trip!

October 16th through October 30th, 2009.

My contract manufacturer for TV-B-Gone and TripGlasses and Trippy RGB Waves
kits (and a few other things) has a plant in Shanghai and a plant in Ji Ning
(about half way between Shanghai and Beijing) (both are SEZs -- Special
Economic Zones).

Mike Zhao, an American who lives in San Rafael, but born in Shanghai, is the
head of the contract manufacturer, called Etonnet. He's also a total geek,
and goes to Maker Faire, and has been to Noisebridge. He's going to
Shanghai and Ji Ning starting on October 16th, and asked me if I'd like to
go, and asked if other NB people (and/or others) would like to go check out
the manufacturing scene and China. Mike will return on the 25th, but I
think it would be cool if the rest of us go to Beijing for a few days and
check out a bit of China-ness there, as well as visit with some hacker-types
at Beijing university. We will return on 30-October-2009.

To give a little taste of what it might be like:

A few months ago, Bunny, who manufactures Chumby in China, organized a trip
to China to show interested people the manufacturing scene (and China).
 Evil Mad Scientist went along:

http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/shenzhen

Would people be interested in going on such a trip? The cost would be very
reasonable, as these things go, and the bulk of the cost would be the plane
tickets to and from China. At the moment, a round trip ticket costs about
$850.

If you are interested, please add your name to the wiki page I set up for
the trip:

https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/ChinaTrip

You do not need to be a member of Noisebridge to go on this trip.

Mitch.

One of my former employers is looking for help managing their network and
workstations. They are a fun startup based out of Alameda that is working on
a renewable energy project.

Duties would include supporting and maintaining a mixed network of
Win/Mac/Linux boxes, network hardware/software and a few network peripherals
like IP printers etc.. Nothing particularly complex.

It would be a consulting gig, with hourly rate to be negotiated with the
employer. Please respond to me off list to get more details and to get in
touch with them.

Thanks!
Mitchell Heinrich

Thought that this might be of interest. Phil is my old prof and I've
been to a few of his Critter Salon events. I highly recommend them.
I'm gonna go w/ my 'scope and pond scum samples. See you there!
Best,

Hello,

I have recently started as an assistant professor at USF, teaching in
the department of Art and Architecture. My own art practice is at the
crossroads of the arts and sciences, and I have a history of working
collaboratively with local institiutions that include The Exploratorium,
The California Academy Sciences and others. You can see some of my past
work here: www.philross.org.

This Saturday I will be hosting a microscopy demonstration at a
salon-space I run in the Mission District. Tomorrow I will drop by some
posters for your department. Please come by if you are in SF this
Saturday, and please forward this along to any peers and students who
might find this interesting.

Sincerely,
Phil Ross

*_An Enormous Microscopic Evening_*

We live in a golden age of microscopes, in which new forms, designs and
applications for this fantastic tool are constantly being developed and
employed. On Saturday September 12th from 6-9PM, CRITTER invites people
to get small in a big way at an Enormous Microscopic Evening. In this
event CRITTER will celebrate, demonstrate and display a variety of these
magnification devices, from state of the art equipment and futuristic
gadgets to home made single lens scopes designed to see the invisible.
Organisms and live cells will be on display, and people are invited to
bring in their own samples to view and inspect. Everyone will have the
opportunity to take home a photo of their very own cheek cells and
gram-stained bacteria. Images will be projected onto walls, fog, cell
phones and surrounding buildings, in addition to the more traditional
ways of peering down the tubes. Learn how to make your own sophisticated
microscope using easy to find materials and simple construction techniques!

An Enormous Microscopic Evening will include: The Exploratorium?s Living
Systems Department, The Carnegie Institute for Science?s Department of
Plant Biology, The Fletcher Lab from UC Berkeley, The SF Microscopical
Society, and the Merritt College Microscopy Program amongst others.

*When:* Saturday, September 12th from 6-9PM
*Where:* the Studio for Urban Projects: 3579 17th Street (btw Dolores
and Guerrero)
*Cost:* FREE!! Please RSVP to crittersalon AT gmail.com

Hi everyone,
I've heard about noise bridge last week, in the french Frhack conferences.
It's a great thing, because I'll come in San Francisco on October 1st, for
one year (study in a french Computer Science school, SUPINFO, sponsorised by
Dominican University in USA).

Like I'm passionated by hacking and informatic security stuff, it will be a
pleasure to join your community for one year, and learn lots of things with
you (because my skills aren't strong).
Does someone here make a roommate and have a room open in the beginning of
October ? I'll come with my girlfriend, so I'd like to find a room
(furnished if possible, with a bed 2 places of course), around $800 per
month (we are student, life is difficult and we couldn't pay more :/ ).

It could be really nice for me if I make a roommate with another people
passionated by hacking. Then my school will be in north of San Francisco (
here<
http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF8&q=supinfo+san+francisco&fb=1&split=1&cid=0,0,4640579468386354828&ei=9xGtSouODc7KjAf-4JHuBw&z=16&iwloc=A
>),
so if you can propose me a location near this place, it will be perfect :D

Thank you for your answer if interested,

Best regards, and see you soon at San Francisco
Adrien Lemaire

PS : I've also sent this email to the board@ list, it was a mistake, sorry.
