(I've cheerleaded (cheerled?) for crams on this list in the past, but it's
been a while, so I'll do it again.)

Crams are great!  Go cram!

They're absolutely the best way to get started in ham radio.  You miss out
on the cultural aspects of things, so you'll need to find some way to fill
in those gaps.  But they allow you to go out and buy your own radio, listen
in on nets and things, and actually transmit yourself Really Soon.
