I dont want to see this idea die.

I would also mention that the demoparties (in the demoscene) are the closest
thing in the geek-world that I can think of that is similar to this idea.

In the demoparties, sometimes there is a "wild compo" category where people
do hacks on anything that does not fit the more traditional categories (such
as oldschool platform, 4k intros, etc) In the "wild" category we usually
have hacks that involve circuitry and/or repurposing all kinds of electronic
equipments. An example of it is the YouScope demo that is a C program that
generates stereo audio signals that are not really "audio", but instead they
work as electron beam controllers: you connect them to an oscilloscope and
set it up to XY-mode, so you can see amazing graphics on the osciloscope!
