Forwarded from my dear friend, the talented and altogether awesome
Sarah Dopp. Might anyone with Noisebridge blood in their veins care to
help her out? I would volunteer in a nflop, but seeing as I'm in
London at the moment, I doubt my assistance would be of much use.

Cheers,

Slim

Subject: Help me assemble some gender art this weekend?

Hey Craftyfolk,

I'm wondering if I can food-bribe and/or fame-bribe any of you (or
your burningman-ish friends) to help me with an art project assembly
this weekend.

Here's the dilly.

There's going to be a big art exhibit at the LGBT Center in February
called "Who You Callin' Queer?" about gender & nonviolence, and
Genderfork.com (my baby) agreed to sponsor one of its stations.  I
originally understood Sponsorship to mean, "you will direct the nature
of the station and offer us press coverage."  It has since turned
into, "You will build the art."

I know how to make websites, but not wood structures.  So I'm calling
(begging) for reinforcements.  Halp!

Here's the event site: http://www.underminingviolence.org/exhibit.html
... and it will likely be traveling to other cities once it's done
with SF.

Here's what we're building:

You know those gameshow-like wheels you can spin, and wherever it
stops is "what you get"?  We're building three of those.  They're like
the Wheel of Fortune wheel, only vertical (on a post, facing the
audience) instead of on the ground.  And not nearly as big -- just a
foot or so in diameter each.

This is an interactive art exhibit, so the visitor will spin the three
wheels.  One wheel will have a bunch of gender identities on it, one
wheel will have a bunch of faces, and one wheel will have a bunch of
sexual orientations.  The idea is that they will spin the wheels, get
a random combination of gender, sexual orientation, and face, and be
forced to reckon with the possibility that this combination could
represent a person.  Then they'll be asked to write out their gut
reactions to the questions, "Would you be friends with this person?"
and "Would you hire this person?"

The event organizer and I are taking responsibility for the materials
(he's got most of the structural stuff in his garage already, and i
need to design and print up the signage).

I'm looking for two-ish people who can...

- Commit to a getting a bunch of work done with me this Saturday
morning and/or anytime Sunday (23rd & 24th) in Glen Park (in the
exhibit organizer's garage)

- Coordinate over email before then to confirm that we do, indeed,
have all the right materials, and identify anything we might be
missing.

- And basically: put in some creative grunt labor time, make smart
decisions about structural stability, and have my back.

In exchange...

- your name will be printed on the exhibit sign as a contributor, and
- I will take you out for dinner and squish my gratitude all over your face

Can any of you do this?  Please lemme know ASAP if you're up to it.
Or please forward if you know the right person.

thank you so much!!
xo,
Sarah
