Above all, don't forget that everything you hear here is anecdotal.

There is no hard coded set of procedures that is followed 100% 
accurately, not at banks, not at passport control, not at stores or 
restaurants. You may experience none, some, or all of the things you 
read on this thread, and you may experience things none of the rest of 
us ever have.

Perhaps the best advice is to expect the unexpected, and pack 
accordingly. Use common sense, be aware of your surroundings, and always 
carry a towel.
