We're considering things like using WiFi, using smart phones as the
remote control, alarm console, etc... arduinos for microcontrollers,
and all kinds of zany ideas on motion detection and capture...
see list archive first few posts.
With Wifi and a cell, you have a small, capable console that can
communicate securely (via WPA2-PSK, SSL, and/or SSH) to control the
system, display graphical status pages, etc....
