[Noisebridge-discuss] Grad student survey request

i found your survey offensive by the second
page, mainly because of the emphasis on mainline
retailers. because others responded and your
re-response seemed sincere, i went back and
completed the survey.

mainly i don't understand what you expect to
learn from the questions. the word "hobby" has
some baggage that i can ignore, i'm assuming
"activities" or some such will do.
as far as i can tell, noisebridge tool and
supply acquisition is on the order of dumpster
diving, and to some extent shopping at specialty
stores and soliciting donations of fairly
specialized books and some exotic equipment.
repurposing broken crap and various discarded
gizmos seems common and even important.
the spirit of "maker" or "hacker" or "do-er"
or ... has a creative component that your survey
doesn't explore that i can tell. there's also
a spirit of independence and, i think,
rebellion that accompanies the spirit of doing,
making....

i'm still offended, mainly because of the big
spread between your take on noisebridge (as best
i can tell) and what noisebridge seems to me to
be about--in other words, your approach seems
thoughtless, sloppy, and inconsiderate.

i'm NOT trying to give you a bad time; i'm
giving you feedback.
