  At Hartford Street Zen Center, we always end the Saturday talk
  by mentioning that "Hartford Street Zen Center is very
  dependent on your donations.". It seems to have the right
  balance of tact and directness; it's similar to the approach
  taken by many other temples I have visited.

  The Zen system in California has been fooling with the formula
  for about 40 years now. I'm sure there was a time when they
  thought they shouldn't -- and wouldn't -- say anything at all.
