[Noisebridge-discuss] used/scavenged LEDs

Hello all,

I am building a Peggy 2 from the good folks at Evil Mad Scientist, it's a 25x25 general-purpose LED board. As opposed to buying a boring, sane set of identical lights, what I would really like to do is scavenge old LEDs from existing electronics. This is less an attempt to save money than it is an attempt to make a secondhand art piece. Ideally what I would end up with is a mish-mash of different-sized and different-colored LEDs, all obtained from old electronics. But I need a lot of them - 625 to be exact - although not necessarily all at once; I have no problem with this being an ongoing project where I get a few at a time.

So I'm looking for a source of old electronics; appliances, VCRs, circuit boards, anything that is no longer of any valuable except for recycling, and which I can desolder LEDs from. I don't mind paying a small amount for them, although I need to keep it sane in terms of $$/LED; if I pay $5 for an old VCR and only get one LED from it, that won't work.

Anyway, it seemed to me that this was the right place to turn! :)
