Try disabling all your serial output when you're compiling for non-USB
usage.

I had a problem like this and I don't recall but I think that's how I solved
the problem.

going out on a limb here, but the ftdi usb serial cable i use has power
too. are you sure you don't have a drive fight somewhere?
