Hi Noisebridge!
I've been lurking on this list for a bit now, figured I'd introduce myself.
I'm an artist, and a technologist, seeking other artist/technologists to
play with! For my "day job" I'm a psychologist by training who evolved
into a technologist, I work at Yahoo! now as a social media researcher.
Before that I was in the startup world a few years, and before that
Microsoft Research. As an artist I started as a very traditional portrait
artist (oils) but have evolved into doing large scale,
collaborative installations, often (though not always) incorporating tech as
a creative medium. (Yes, this also means I am a burner.)
In addition to doing a lot of art/tech, I'm also a "creative community"
organizer. Up in Seattle I was the lead Dorkbot organizer for about
five years, it's a very active group that has a much more art focus than
dorkbot does down here in SF. We put on the art show "people doing strange
things with electricity" every other year, and a year ago I organized
"Frayed Wire", a one day mini conference for people at the intersection of
art and technology. I've also organized a lot of large scale arts
fundraising parties.
I've been looking around for almost a year now, and Noisebridge and GAFFTA
seem like to the two orgs where people most similar to me can be found. I'd
like to be more actively involved, have been plotting and planning my next
big geek art project (lasers!), and would like to be getting to know people
more for both peer education and collaboration.
I've been thinking maybe a casual meetup of artist+geeks? Two questions I
had before setting something up: first, what exists already for people like
me to find other people like me, and two, assuming this meeting isn't
already happening somewhere, is there enough interest to have such a meetup?
