The key thing about the Teensy is that it's an Atmega32u4, which is an
8 bit AVR, but with USB on the chip, instead of needing an FTDI.

Conveniently enough, LadyAda just released her breakout board for
these, which is also $20.

It comes with a convenient bootloader, as well as a standard 6 pin
header for reflashing via ISP.

(I'll also note that it's got a way more useful footprint, since it
doesn't break out a whole group of pins such that they'll short when
placed in a breadboard.)
