This is certain to be of interest to some hackerspace people.
Gasification is an alternative energy source-cum-waste disposal method
that's being heavily developed for home use by the folks at The
Shipyard, a kind of maker space in Berkeley.  If you haven't heard of
either, it's worth a few minutes to check them out!

Here's the schedule for talks and presentations the Gasification and
Biochar workshop this weekend at The Shipyard / ALL Power Labs.  As this
is a rather informal gathering, times might change, and other talks
might appear or disappear.  In short, if you are here you will not miss
anything interesting.  We have about 60 people attending from around the
country and world.  It should be very fun.

Before the start of our workshop on Sunday we will gather at the
Berkeley Permaculture Demonstration Garden to apply workshop created
biochar to a test plot at the garden.  This is part of 350.org
<http://350.org/>'s 10-10-10 Global Work Party.  There will be a brief
presentation on the benefits of biochar as a soil amendment, then hand
tilling of the soil.  Event begins at 10am.

Permaculture Demonstration Garden*

The APL workshop will be open and free of charge for any drop bys during
350.org <http://350.org/>'s Sunday global day of action.  We will be
running the BEK throughout the day and hosting a series of biochar
related talks.

Biochar Basics, carbon markets, and the emerging protocol

3pm - Jim Fournier, President, Biochar Engineering Corp*
Biochar's role in climate mitigation, with an assessment of its scale
potential. this is an update of his talk from ibi brazil.

3:00pm - Kelpie Wilson, International Biochar Initiative

*Kelpie has recently returned from a month in Brazil where she toured
Terra Preta sites on the Amazon River near Manaus, visited small farms
in Acre near the border of Bolivia and presented information on biochar
to state agencies in Acre, a region where development and deforestation
are accelerating. She will present ideas and perspectives on how biochar
might contribute to a more sustainable path for the region.
