Computer games are what got me into programming. I was way into Doom and
Commander Keen and crap, then I started playing with ZZT and Megazeux
and their "level editors" that turned out to be game creation systems
complete with their own scripting languages. Then I started learning C,
and allegro for the graphics/sound/input/networking aspects, and soon
replaced it with SDL. I learned graphics design, sound editing, some
music editing, and web design for my games. I got playing with
javascript and php and mysql databases and realized I could make money
off of it, and I did other programming and security stuff as a result.
I've recently made some iphone and android games too.

Computer games are awesome. In fact, is there anyone here that didn't
start hacking as a result of computer games? I learned how to use BBS's
to get games; I had to learn all about drivers to make them work; I
learned how to use irc and usenet (and javascript, to get around stupid
ad schemes on warez sites) to pirate games; I learned how to format my
hard drive once I realized pirated games came with malware; I learned
how to program to make my own games.

Of course I eventually did other programming and hacking for other
reasons, but computer games are where it's at. I rarely play games
anymore, but starcraft 2 is sweet. Can't wait for the protoss and zerg
campaigns to come out. Maybe I should check out the saturday night
gaming at nb sometime.
