Depends on the failure mode.
I used to fix conventional hard disks by swapping out PCBs, but you have
to find a nearly-identical revision to swap with.
If it's a data corruption problem, there are many tools out there for
recovering files based on file headers.
Now would be a good time for him to invest in a backup hard drive
so this doesn't happen again. Not as good as before the crash,
but better late than never :-)
